About Dr. Sumi

Dr. Sumi has been providing compassionate and high-quality pediatric care for three decades in Torrance, California. He strongly believes in working with families toward the common goal of good health.  He values the importance of allowing ample time to answer questions and discuss topics during your office visits.

Dr. Sumi is a second-generation pediatrician.  His father, Walter T. Sumi, MD, practiced in the South Bay for many years until his retirement in 1995. As a blessing for his many years of practice, Dr. Sumi now provides care for children of his former patients. He is truly appreciative of the multigenerational trust in his pediatric care.

Dr. Sumi was born and raised in the South Bay.  After graduating from high school, he ventured to the East Coast where he earned his B.A. in East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.  He migrated to the Midwest for medical school at Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine.  After receiving his M.D. degree, he returned to the West Coast and completed his residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Dr. Sumi is married and has three adult children.  While his children were younger, he was actively involved in coaching AYSO soccer and participating in the YMCA Adventure Guides program.  His interests, both past and present, include music, travel, karate and spending time with family and friends.
